Ludwig van Beethoven: that most seminal of classical music composers, regarded by many of his admirers as the apotheosis of the Germanic flowering of classical music; and by some of his Mediterranean detractors as the most culpable example of the Germanic school's domination of classical music to this day. But even Beethoven had his Spanish side. Known in his day by the nickname 'the Spaniard' because of his dark hair and complexion, and broody, tempestuous character. Perhaps he inherited these from his maternal grandmother, who was indeed a Spaniard from * Spain. In his works there are forays into the folk music of Spain and Portugal (his boleros predate Ravel's by over 100 years) Interest in setting European folksongs extended to Spain and Portugal (as well as many other European shores), and he was familiar with the music of * and *.
Luísa Tender's most recent CD release of Bomtempo's complete piano sonatas, signed copies on sale after the concert. All of these composers coincided in London. We are grateful to the Clementi Museum in * for giving us their beautiful drawing room in which to present this intimate salon piano recital as we journey back to the London of Beethoven and Bomtempo.
