In this unusual combination, two Brazilian virtuosos, double-bassist Gustavo Quintino and guitarist Fabricio Mattos will explore Brazilian music for double bass and guitar by living composers from many regions of the country. Interspersing solos with duets, Quintino and Mattos will journey around many soundscapes of Brazilian and South-American music, with works by composers such as Rodrigo Lima, Fabiano Borges and Sonia Ray, with special emphasis to the music of Villani-Côrtes.

Gustavo Quintino was born in São Paulo where he graduated in double bass from the São Paulo Municipal School of Music and Cantareira College. He won various competitions and was also ‘highly commended’ at the 46th Campos do Jordão International Winter Festival, where he also received the ‘Royal Academy of Music Award’, a scholarship to attend an exchange course at the RAM in 2018. After playing with the most important symphonic groups in São Paulo, in 2019 Gustavo moved to Australia, where he has been playing regularly with various orchestras. Gustavo has recently been invited to become an orchestral member of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, in Austria, and has created the project ‘Brazil on Bass’ aiming to present the unique variety of Brazilian music through the voice of the double bass, with scheduled tours in Australia, Europe and Brazil.

Fabricio Mattos was born in Curitiba and began his musical life at the age of six playing percussion instruments at carnival parties with his father. Fabricio has been based in London for many years, where he works as a performer and creative director in many projects, including the enterprise, New Stages Creations, and as a music curator in various events at the Embassy of Brazil. He has performed worldwide, from major music centres such as England, Italy, Switzerland, and the US, to countries with rising concerts tradition such as China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Zambia. In his eventful career he created projects such as the WGC-Worldwide Guitar Connections ─ having just launched its triple album, the ‘WGC Box’ ─ and won prizes such as the acclaimed ‘Julian Bream Award’, awarded to him by the legendary guitarist Julian Bream in London. In 2023 Mattos will become the first Latin-American musician ever to be awarded a PhD in Music Performance from the Royal Academy of Music.

This concert is organised by The Iberian & Latin American Music Society (ILAMS) as part of Echoes Festival 2023 in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes and New Stages Creations
